Altai State Medical University — earlier known as Altai State Medical Institute — was founded in 1954 in the city of Barnaul, in the Altai region of Russia. It is acknowledged by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation and stands as one of the central hubs for medical research, education and cultural exchange in the region. The university offers a 6-year MBBS programme designed for international students, with English as the medium of instruction at the international faculty.

Over the years the university has produced around 30,000 graduates, and roughly 4,000 students enrol in its medical programmes every year. It is structured into 6 faculties and about 60 departments — including Medicine, Pediatrics, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Medicine & Preventive Studies, and a dedicated Faculty for Foreign Students — and is supported by a large academic staff of doctors, candidates of science, honoured scientists and distinguished physicians.
